This guide explains how UK hospitality businesses can achieve B Corp certification.
What is B Corp Certification and B Lab UK?
Certified B Corporations (B Corp) are a global sustainability movement of businesses seeking to balance purpose with profit. The non-profit organisation, B Lab, established B Corp certification in 2006 in the U.S. Operations in the UK are overseen by B Lab UK, which was founded in 2015 and is based in London.
B Corp certification evaluates the overall social and environmental performance of a company. Rather than focusing solely on product quality, B Lab assesses the complete impact of the business, certifying organisations that meet rigorous standards of social responsibility, environmental stewardship, public transparency and legal accountability.
Why Get B Corp Certified in the UK Hospitality Sector?
The food and drink sector is one of the largest within the UK B Corp community, proving particularly popular among food manufacturing businesses. Well known food brands that have secured B Corp certification include Abel & Cole, Ella’s Kitchen, Pip & Nut and Danone UK.
By contrast, certified businesses in the hospitality sector represent a small fraction, accounting for around 1% of all accredited UK B Corps. However, this presents a powerful opportunity for hotels, restaurants and caterers to stand out as true pioneers in sustainable tourism.
Verified Corporate ESG Compliance for Hospitality Brands
Businesses can view B Corp certification as an actionable, operational blueprint for ESG. By using the B Impact Assessment (BIA), B Lab directly maps B Corp performance to the three core pillars of environmental, social and governance criteria. While many corporate ESG reports rely on voluntary self reporting, B Corp certification offers third party verification to build credibility.
Achieving B Corp status provides verified proof that a business meets high corporate ESG standards, using tracked performance indicators to measure long-term impact and prove their dedication to sustainability to corporate customers.
Brand Recognition and Ethical Reputation in the UK
B Corp is one of the most widely recognised trustmarks in the UK. Achieving certification enhances brand loyalty among eco-conscious consumers, boosts staff retention while attracting highly motivated candidates, and builds stronger investor confidence.
What Are the Core Criteria for B Corp Certification?
Governance: Evaluates company mission, ethics, transparency and the legal commitment to consider all stakeholders in decision making.
Workers: Assesses financial security, health and safety, professional development and overall employee wellbeing.
Community: Examines diversity, equity, inclusion, local economic involvement, supply chain management and charitable giving.
Environment: Measures overall environmental stewardship, including energy usage, carbon emissions, water conservation and circular waste practices.
Customers: Reviews how well the business serves its customers through ethical marketing, data privacy and products or services that promote the public good.
A Guide to the B Corp Certification Process
✦ Completing the Free B Impact Assessment (BIA)
The foundation of the certification journey is the B Impact Assessment (BIA). This comprehensive digital tool evaluates how your daily operations and business model create value for your workforce, community, environment and customers, measuring both your operational footprint and specific impact business models.
To begin, you will need to sign up for the free BIA platform online. You will work through questions across these impact areas, earning points based on your business model and operational practices.
To submit your application, your assessed baseline score must reach a minimum of 80 points out of 200.
✦ Preparing for B Lab Audit Verification and Certification Fees
After reaching 80 points or more, you can submit your BIA through the portal to register your intent to certify with B Lab. At this stage, you must pay a non-refundable submission fee, which ranges from £250 to £800 plus VAT depending on company revenue.
Following submission, B Lab conducts a thorough verification process. This phase requires audit preparation, as businesses must provide supporting documentation to substantiate every answer given in the assessment.
B Lab analysts will review financial records, supplier contracts, staff handbooks and energy bills, often conducting background checks, virtual site visits and interviews to verify compliance.
✦ If your score drops to between 75 and 79 points, B Lab grants a 30 to 90-day grace period to address gaps and raise your score back above 80.
✦ If your score drops below 75, you must make further operational improvements, resubmit your assessment, and repay the application fee.
If your verified score remains at 80 points or higher following the audit, congratulations! Your business will achieve B Corp certification. You will then sign the B Corp Agreement and pay your annual certification fee, which is scaled according to your business’s turnover and starts at £600 plus VAT.
The good news is that eligible businesses with a turnover under £5 million that are majority owned by underrepresented groups (including people of colour or underrepresented ethnicities, women, trans or non-binary individuals, disabled individuals and members of the LGBTQ+ community) can access a 40 percent equity discount on these annual fees.
Once your business is officially certified as a B Corp, you must recertify every 3 years to maintain your status.
